Power Profiles: Butter the fox

Power: healing

Age: 6

“Nano you need to be careful!” Butter frowned as she stared at the dark bruising on her brother’s arms.

“Sorry.” Nano’s brown eyes were fixed on the ground.

Butter smiled softly and lifted her brother’s chin, “Don’t be sorry. One day you’ll be a great help to Zach on his adventures… just remember you don’t have to be as fast as he is.”

“Dad kept up with Sonic…” Nano’s voice was soft.

Gently Butter placed a hand over Nano’s wounds and warmth passed between them, her blue eyes shone as she watched the dark stains or her brother’s bright coat recede, “I’m sure you’ll figure something out; you’re smart Nano.”

Glancing at his arms in surprise Nano glanced up at his sister, “Thanks!”

Power: Spin jump

Age: 10

Butter frowned as she watched the mechanical claws latch onto the trembling form of her brother and pulled him away from her. Eggman loomed over the two foxes with a cold grin on his face.

“Well I wonder what Prince Zach will do to rescue his little friend?” the Doctor’s blue glasses hid his eyes but Butter could feel the anger radiating off the man.

“Zach will know it’s a trap.” Butter forced herself to ignore her fear for Nano and to sound strong, “He won’t be coming alone.”

 “That may be true but I doubt it will help him.”  Eggman smiled and gestured to a large red and black robot behind him, “My new robot requires a very special energy source…” He reached out and pulled Nano’s ear, “you.”

“What?” Neither Prower twin could believe what they were hearing.

“Imagine how helpless Zach and his little friends will be if they can’t destroy my robot without hurting you! Even Sonic, Knuckles and Tails will be useless! It’s the perfect plan!”

As the Doctor’s maniacal laughed filled the room Butter’s mind was reeling. She couldn’t let Nano be used in that machine. She couldn’t watch Zach and Jo be hurt trying not to injure her brother. Blue eyes searched frantically round the room until Butter spotted a small opening at the top of the glass cage she was in. The claws! It wasn’t closed yet!

Gathering all her strength Butter leapt high into the air and started spinning. As she cleared the tank she aimed for Eggman’s  and slammed into the villain hard enough to force him to drop Nano. As soon as she hit the ground Butter launched herself again. As she spun wildly towards the robot she was dimly aware of Eggman’s screams of protest. The metal bent upon impact and within a few moments she had destroyed the machine.

When he spoke Eggman’s voice was a hiss “You! You’ll pay for this!”

“Not today she won’t Egghead!” As Butter followed Zach’s voice she smiled at the sight of all her friends in the doorway.

Jo’s violet eyes moved to the machine, “Looks like we missed the party.”

Butter gave her most winning smile, “No one hurts my brother.”      

Power: Revival

Age: 13

“Jo!” Butter raced wildly towards the fallen form of the echidna.

She was so desperate to reach him that the falling robots and frantic cries of her friends failed to reach her ears. Jo’s breathing was shallow, weak and Butter felt a chill run down her back. She was sure someone was calling her, giving instructions but all that mattered was Jo and healing him. The echidna’s orange fur was brown with dust and debris from the battle and his gloves were torn as Butter ran her hands across his fallen form to check for injuries.

“Jo! Jo can you hear me?” Tears stung at her eyes but Butter ignored them as she focused on the examining her fallen friend, “Jo I need you, you mean the world to me… You’re handsome and funny and the greatest guy I’ve ever met… I love you Jo.”

Finally Butter let the tears spill as she tried to revive Jo. The orange echidna’s breathing didn’t improve and his eyes didn’t open. Frowning Butter poured more energy into the echidna just as a dark shadow loomed overhead. Suddenly violet eyes shot open and Butter felt herself being tossed backwards as Jo sprung up to deliver a powerful uppercut to the robot. With a quick glance back at her, Jo ran back to the battle…

When the last of the robots had fallen and Butter had just finished healing Beth, Jo returned.

“So you think I’m handsome?” He grinned lazily.

A furious blush crossed Butter’s cheeks, “What gave you that idea?”

Purple eyes shone with amusement, “and funny? The greatest guy you’ve ever met?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” the fox twisted her hands in her skirt nervously.

“That’s what I heard.” Jo smiled as he leant closer, “you seem to think about me a lot.”

“How hard did that robot hit you Jo?” Zach called playfully from across the street.

“I think you might have been dreaming while you took that nap!” Jamie laughed as she approached, “right Butter?”

“Yes… you must have dreamt it Jo…” Butter smiled weakly, grateful for the diversion, but she could feel Jo’s eyes on her as she walked away to check on Nano.

And that final statement, the one that Jo had chosen to tease her about, still hung in the air between them.
