Cody was, to say the least, interesting. My first glimpse of him was a brown fox leaning against the door of what I could only assume was Zoey's house. Despite his slouch it was clear that he was taller than Ace.
"Zoey! Zoey he's messing with something!" Ace's voice was a trill in his panicked stated and as I turned to look at him I saw that all his fur stood on end.
Calmly amber gold eyes glanced at Cody "It's not that big Ace."
Blue ears twitched "It's Cody"
Almost as soon as those words escaped Ace's lips the small device in the other's hands started to smoke and, from the startled look in those brown eyes, that clearly wasn't good.
"Oh no" the groan from Ace was so half-hearted I had a feeling he was long past the point of despair "Cody drop it and run!"
Hesitation lasted only a moment before Cody decided that was the best advice; he'd barely reached us before the device burst into flames. As it was a small machine it only lasted a few seconds but the blackened form left in its wake was unrecognisable.
"Please tell me that wasn't why you wanted to borrow my second camera! Please!" Ace's long hair hung in his eyes and his ears drooped in despair as he shook the other male's shoulders, he sounded close to tears.
Zoey leant in close "If that was the camera you'd better be prepared to run into the house and lock them out; Ace will bang on about it for days"
By the time I looked back at Ace he was tearing fur from his ears whilst poor Cody tried to get a word in.
"Ace- Ace calm down!"
Blue eyes hardened and Ace rounded on the bigger fox "Calm down! You almost burnt down Zoey's house! What if she'd been in there?!"
Suddenly Zoey's ears flattened in irritation "If I'd been inside Ace Cody would have been there with me!"  her voice was a hiss "Now stop showing yourself up in front of Pixie! She must thing we're all insane by the way you two children act!"
"Sorry" was the pair's joint response as they suddenly found the floor very interesting.
Zoey beamed "Good boys"
It was that moment that Cody finally seemed to notice me "Hey Zoey who's the vixen?"
"Why? You interested?" Ace spoke up, spare camera clearly forgotten.
Zoey shot him a withering look and Cody laughed
"Ace you sound like my mother!"
The blue furred fox shot him an almost amused look "Someone has to look after you; it's not like you do it yourself"
Blushing wildly Cody turned back to me "So you're new here… erm I could do with a name here"
"Pixie" I offered with a laugh.
"You don't say" Cody echoed Ace's earlier words "Never been to the city I take it then?"
It was my turn to blush "No I've never been to one, I used to live in the country"
Three pairs of eyes widened in surprise.
"Forget the painting Ace we need to give Pixie here a tour" Zoey grinned at me
Ace's eyes clouded over again "I have my camera… I could get some great landscapes!"
Laughing Cody winked at Zoey "When does he not have that camera round his neck?"
"When you blow them up!" Ace's growl was light but he was clearly still upset about that.
Rolling her eyes Zoey lead me away. As we passed the boys I could help but laugh as Cody tried to defend himself.
"It's not like you don't have twelve more at home!"
I was going to like this freedom thing. Zoey kept pointing out sights, famous building, fun places to visit; Ace was taking photos of everything and as a result kept bumbing into people and Cody's eyes were clouded over as if he were deep in thought. The deeper we went the more people filled the streets but Zoey strode through confidently and everyone let us pass. The sounds and sights were overwhelming after all my time away from the world and I soon found my eyes glued to the pavement, only Zoey's hand on my arm ensured I was going the right way. After what I assumed to be a quick walk, but one I found exhausting after years without much exercise and my earlier trekking, we reached a large square filled with shops and a fountain at its centre.
Zoey beamed at my wide eyes "Impressive isn't it?"
Slowly I nodded.
Cody laughed and ruffled my hair "you can get everything from a new wardrobe to car engine parts here"
At that point Ace finally caught up "there's a great art shop round the corner and Zoey's Dad's gallery is here too!"
Amber-gold eyes narrowed "I spend enough time in there with my father so you can forget visiting him Ace"
Shooting Ace a sympathetic grin Cody made a suggestion "Pixie should choose"
Both Zoey and Ace nodded at the idea… which is why I saw him. As I was looking round to decide where to go I caught sight of his red eyes.  His gaze locked with mine then widened with fear, recognition and finally rage. I must have made an involuntary sound as suddenly Zoey spoke up
"Who's that guy watching us?"
At the edge of my vision I saw Ace lean forward "He's coming this way…"
Before any of us could react to the pacing male a loud, shrill shriek came from the crowd
"Cody!"
I glanced over at my walking nightmare but his gaze was no longer on us; he, like everyone else in the square, was focused on the green eyed girl who literally stalked her way over. Her long dark hair billowed out behind her as she moved and her sleek tail was puffing out as she closed in.
As soon as she reached us she turned on Cody.
"Who are these GIRLS?!?" she spat the word girls out in disgust. She was making such a scene that the security guards had actually left their shops in case they needed to restrain her.
Brown eyes widened and Cody blushed wildly "Lauren! I-it-it's not what you think Kitten!"
A brow raised and when she spoke her voice was like ice "Really Cody? Then please tell me why else you'd have blown me off if you weren't dating one of them!"
All the drama had distracted me which is why I screamed as the shadow loomed over us. His red eyes were intent and he reached out… and grabbed Cody's friend. She turned clearly with a snide remark about whoever had the nerve to touch her but her eyes widened at the sight of him and she joined me in the screaming. The noise she made was so loud Ace resorted to covering his ears.
It was then Lauren made herself useful "Get off me!" Her cries echoed round the open space and the note of panic in her voice was unmistakable "Leave me alone you creep!"
The red eyes widened in surprise and she stared him down as he tried to speak. Quickly his gaze darted to the side; he mustn't have like what he saw as he shot her a pleading look and vanished into thin air. A moment later a security guard hit the now empty ground at our feet. Lauren scowled, apparently perfectly calm after being grabbed and shot Cody a filthy look as the security dusted himself off.
She reached up to touch his shoulder, I hadn't realised how short she was but she had to stand on her toes to reach, and smiled sweetly when he turned to face her "Thank you so much for the help!" she gushed at him, beaming. The guards eyes were unfocused as she ploughed on "You scared him off; he ran right though us and into that little back alley over there" she gestured to a tiny space between two shops "If I were you I'd call the police and maybe a news team, tell them some strange male with red eyes is trying to grab helpless girls off the streets… get some witness statements…"
The guard nodded and opened his mouth to speak but she cut him off "Not from us of course; we're all stressed, scared and we just want to go home" their gazes were locked with her green eyes locked on his own hazel eyes "There are plenty of others here… you don't need us"
Again the guard nodded and this time he spoke "You kids should get home; the streets don't seem very safe today" He turned to Cody "Can you get the ladies home?"
Dutifully Cody grinned "It would be my pleasure Sir"
The guard nodded and went to talk with his colleagues.
Lauren turned on Cody "I can't believe I just had to save you! You know I struggle to hypnotise people!"
Cody sighed and held out his arms; into which she promptly collapsed "You didn't have to do that"
"Because someone vanishing into thin air is normal" Her voice was muffled by his fur.
Faintly I picked up on low growling to my side "Exactly so who was that guy? Who are you? And most importantly how do you two know each other?" Whether Ace was trebling from rage or fear was a mystery.
Sheepishly Cody grinned and pulled the cat closer "Ace meet Lauren, she's my girlfriend"
The smug look she shot me left me no doubt about that relationship. Her eyes warmed when they were on Ace however "And the rest of your questions we'll answer later, in somewhere far more private"
Poor Ace xD
